These fleshy bumpy and hanging pieces off the skin are known as skin tags. Many people have them for years without either noticing them or bothering about them. Sometimes, they are very small and are hardly noticed. Sometimes these can be quite big and easily noticed. They grow on various parts of the body such as armpits, neck, eyelids, groins, forearms, under breasts, anus, buttocks, vigina and so on.
Good news is that they are completely harmless and benign. Generally, they are not associated with any health risks or issues. The main reasons people want to get rid of them are cosmetic and aesthetic reasons. They are also not covered by health insurance companies and if you need to take them off, you may have to pay for them privately.
Again, the good news is that there are a few natural and safe home remedies available that may either cost you nothing or just a few bucks will do the job. Like any other self-treatment, it is highly recommended to take precautions and in case of any health conditions speak to a qualified health professional before embarking on the self-remedies at home.

1. Using Apple Cider Vinegar
Raw and unfiltered acv is known for many health benefits. The health benefits of apple cider vinegar are numerous. It can also be used effectively to treat skin tags.
What you will need
- Raw unfiltered ACV
- Cotton balls
Dip the Q-tip in the acv and soak it well. Put the Q-tip several times on the tag to soak it. Take the cotton off the Q-tip or just dip a small piece in the acv from the cotton ball. Place it on tag and put the bandage over it. Wipe off any excess vinegar off the surrounded skin area. Repeat it twice a day. It may take a week or so for the tag to come off.
2. Using Dental Floss Thread or Strings
This method is also used by many people and it works. The drawback is that it is a bit painful and discomforting. Just take a long hair, dental floss thread or any string and tie it tight around the tag. Make sure it is tight enough to cut the blood supply. However, note it should not be so tight to cut it through. After a few days, you will notice the color changing to black. The cutting of the blood supply will block nutrients and the tag will soon start drying up. Leave the flossing string until the tag falls off.
This methods works but it has some downsides as well. Some people find it quite painful. There is also a risk of infection if the area is not properly cleaned. The string or floss thread must be sterilized to avoid any risk of infection.
3. Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is very useful for treating skin conditions such as moles, warts and skin tags. Here is the simple procedure to follow.
- Clean the skin tag and the surrounding area using a cotton ball soaked in water.
- Dip a Q-tip in water and then in tea tree oil.
- Apply the Q-tip to the tag in a circular motion.
- Repeat twice a day.
You may directly dip the Q-tip in tea tree oil without first dipping it in water. This will expedite the cure. However, some people find the undiluted application too irritating. If you find it too irritating or painful, wash with cold water.
4. Castor Oil and Baking Soda
Pure castor oil can be used both internally as well as externally. There are many health benefits of castor oil such as treating constipation, hair growth, anti-inflammation etc. One of the beneficial uses of castor oil is to use it in combination with baking soda for the treatment of skin tags.
- Take half a spoon of baking soda
- Mix it with enough castor oil to make a thick paste.
- Apply the paste to the tag several times a day.
- It may take around two weeks for the tag to come off.
5. Nail Polish
Some people swear by this method. It is perhaps the easiest home remedy. Just apply some nail polish to the skin tag 2 to 3 times a day until it falls off.
Peel the ginger and gently rub it on the skin tag. This may irritate the skin and cause soreness. Alternatively, make a paste of fresh root ginger and apply it to the tag. Cover with something so that the paste sticks to it. It may take 10 to 15 days for the tag to fall off.
Cut garlic into a slice and place it over the tag and secure it with a tap or gauze. Put the garlic slice on the tag before going to bed and replace it in the morning. Before replacing wash it with cold water.
Your skin may burn with continuous use of garlic. Alternatively make a paste of garlic, extra virgin olive oil and honey and apply to the tag and secure it with a tap.
8. Frankincense Essential Oil
Apply the oil directly on the skin tag. If you skin is sensitive then dilute the oil. This method is safe and not very painful. However, it may take longer than other home remedies. It is estimated to take around 2 months for the tags to fall off.
Aspirin contains acetylsalicylic acid which helps to shrink the skin tag. Crush the aspirin into powder and add a little oil to make it a paste. Apply it directly on the tag and seal it with a duct tap. It will dry the tag and finally remove it.
Cutting off right away is the quickest method. Ensure to make the scissors sterilized before using. Numb the area with ice for at least 10 minutes. This method is the quickest yet the most painful. There may also be a lot of bleeding. We do not recommend this method unless supervised by a qualified professional.
