As is clear from the name these are tags of flesh attached to the skin through a stalk. The stalk basically connects the small fleshy lump with the skin and provides it blood and nutrition. Medically, they are known as acrochordons.
Although the exact causes are not known, it has been observed that they occur more in older people than in young people.
Skin tags may grow on any part of the body but they are generally found on parts like armpit, eyelids, groins, under breasts, forearms, neck, face, chin etc.
They vary in size and shape. Skin flaps also grow on genital parts such as around anus, vagina, buttocks, vulva etc.
They even vary in size and shape on the same body. Some are quite small like a tiny grain or a seed of a mustard while some are bigger like a large raisin.
In most cases, these are benign meaning they do not hurt or cause any harm. However, they often cause embarrassment especially if they grow on the obvious part such as face.
Most people would like to get rid of skin tags for cosmetic reasons rather than medical reasons.
Who Gets Skin Tags
They are more chances of getting skin tags in adulthood. However, it does not mean that children and toddlers are immune to skin tags.
Generally, overweight and obese people have higher chances of skin tags growth on their bodies. Such people have folds of skin which rub against each other creating friction which then leads to the growth of skin tags.
Women during pregnancy are also, sometimes, prone to attracting skin tags because of hormonal changes.
Skin tags during pregnancy are temporary and disappear once the period is over.
Should Skin Tags be Removed?
Normally, they are harmless and benign without causing any harm or pain. There are two cases where you should consider the treatment of skin tags.
First, if they change in color or size or they start bleeding or are extremely itching or become painful, then you must see your doctor to rule out any possible complications.
Some cancerous outgrowths may look like skin tags and therefore it is important to see your doctor if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.
What Parts of the Body Do they Grow?
As mentioned earlier, they may grow on any part of the body. The parts which cause most friction are their favourite places.
For instance, most people get them under the arms or inside the armpit. Our arms movement cause them rub against the body which creates friction and the growth of skin tags.
But they are not limited to particular areas on the body and may appear on the following areas.
- Around eyes
- Face such as cheeks
- Under the lips
- Inside vagina
And so on.
How to treat skint tags and what are the various ways that you can get rid of skin tags?
There are many options to consider for the removal of skin tags. Which way should you go will depend upon each individual. For instance, if a tag hurts or is painful or bleeds then without any doubt see a doctor to eliminate any chances of cancerous growths.
If it is benign then you may resort to other methods for the removal of skin tags such as home and natural remedies, cutting it yourself or over the counter medication.
In this post, I will discuss 4 options of removing the skin tags. Let us get started.
Surgical Methods of Removing Skin Tags
For this you will have to go to your dermatologist. They use a variety of methods such as cutting or freezing.
The dermatologist may numb the area locally and then using specialist equipment cut the tag. Once the tag is cut, it is secured with a bandage to stop bleeding and avoid any possible infection.
During cutting, you may not find it painful because of the local anaesthetic. However, you may feel the pain once the numbness is gone in which case your doctor might prescribe you some painkillers.
Cryosurgery or cryotherapy is a method in which the doctor uses liquids such as nitrogen to freeze the tags. Such freezing causes the tags and its stalk to die in a few days.
Another method that doctors use is called cauterization. In this method doctors use special instruments to burn the skin tag.
There are two downsides of the surgical methods.
First, you may not be covered by your insurance and you may have to pay for it. If you have a number of them, you may need to pay several visits to the clinic which may obviously increase the cost.
Second, most people report that the pain often last for a few days and you have to keep taking painkillers. There is also a risk of attracting infection which may put you on antibiotics.
Some people even try to cut them using a sharp knife or blade.
Never even try cutting it yourself using any of these tools. You may cause more harm than benefit.
Another self-treatment is to tie a dental floss thread or a strand of hair around the tag.
This constricts the stalk and thus stops the blood supply. Within a few days the tag falls off.
Remember! The dental floss method is painful. People have reported excruciating pain while trying this method. Once you have tied it, it may be very difficult to untie it.
Another problem with this method is the wound might become infectious. Personally, I do not recommend this method.
Over the Counter Creams and Solutions
There are also some over the counter methods that can be used effectively to cure skin tags.
Make sure that you choose the one that contains only natural ingredients. OTCs are a great non-invasive way for the elimination of tags on the skin. You can also use them at home and get fast results. Here are the top 3 over the counter products you can purchase online or offline.
H-Skin Tag Homeopathic Formula
H-Skin Tag formula is a homeopathic formula by Healing Natural Oils (aka amoils.com) that has been specifically prepared to treat tags on the skin.
The best thing about this formula is that it is absolutely herbal formula without any chemical or harsh ingredients.
H-Skin tag homeopathic formula is manufactured in the USA under strict GMPs (good manufacturing practices). The formula is also FDA registered.
You can order the formula and treat your tags at home naturally. From my personal experience, it takes a bit longer to show results. But that is normal because natural does not mean faster. Natural treatments and remedies generally work slowly.
Another reason that you might consider this homeopathic formula is that it works so gently on the skin. Once the tags are gone, no scar is left behind. After all, you do not want to replace your tags with ugly scars
Home and Natural Remedies
There are several home and natural remedies available for the cure of skin tags. These natural and home remedies will cost you very little as compared to treatment with the dermatologist.
Keep two things in mind while taking home remedies to remove skin tags.
You should take all precautions before conducting any self-treatment.
You should be persistent because natural remedies are normally very slow and take a lot longer than invasive methods. Consistency and patience are the keys to success.
Using Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a great natural tonic. It can bused internally as well as for topical application. Make sure you only go for raw, unfiltered, unpasteurized and organic apple cider vinegar. The one sold in the supermarket does not work.
Just dip a Q-tip in the acv and then apply it to the skin tag. Repeat it several times until the tag is soaked. Repeat this process three times a day.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is highly antiseptic and works great for the treatment of skin tags, warts and even moles.
Just dip a Q-tip in water and then in the oil and apply it to the tag. Repeat the process so that tag is soaked well in the oil. Apply it three times daily.
Remember to dip the Q-tip first in water and then in the tea tree oil. Don’t apply the tea tree oil undiluted which may burn the skin.
This is super effective way to get rid of skin tags. It is painless and has no side effects at all. The only problem is that it is very slow and takes longer than the other methods. It may take up to six weeks to see results.
Take a tablespoon of baking soda and mix it with castor oil to make a thick paste. Apply the paste to the tag. Once the paste is dry and falls off, apply fresh paste. Repeat the process several times a day.
This another method that can be used at home and some people even swear by it.
Simply apply the nail polish using the nail polish brush until it is completely covered. Repeat 3 times a day.
I don’t recommend this method because of the chemical ingredients in nail polish. Due to the chemical ingredients, this is not a natural remedy and may cause some harm.
This is a simple and effective remedy to remove skin flaps. Simply peel a piece of ginger and gently rub it on the affected area.
You can also make a paste of the fresh ginger root and apply it to the tag. You will have to use some band aid to secure the paste.
Garlic is antibacterial and is very effective in killing germs and viruses. Crush a clove of garlic into a paste and then apply to the tag. Secure it with a gauze.
You may wash it with cold water before apply another paste. The downside of this method is the stinking odor of garlic.
Essential Oils Next
There is a good trend among people to use natural remedies for the treatment of skin tags. Essential oils for skin tags is one of them which has gained a significant attention of general public. Not all essential oils work effectively which means some work well than others while a few others may not work at all. We think that Apothecary tea tree oil is one of the best among all essential oils to help in the skin tags removal.
Essential oils have excellent and effective healing properties. They are natural remedies for many ailments and have been used for centuries across cultures and civilisations. Some people think them to be nothing more than old wives tales. However, the reality is they work for many conditions and skin tag is one of them.
There are many kinds of essential oils available in the market. The following four are rated as the top essential oils for the treatment of skin tags.
- Castor Oil
- Oregano Oil
- Frankincense Oil
- Australian Tea Tree Oil
As said earlier, best thing is they work naturally on the skin. When used properly, they do not have harmful or side effects on the body. You can either buy them in pure form or a mixture of them. You can also buy them individually and then blend them together at home to make a perfect and natural solution.
Skin Tags on Eyelids
Skin tags on eye lids are very common and often the cause of much embarrassment. Most people would like to get rid of them for cosmetic reasons rather than any discomfort. The discomfort may increase if there are there a few on the same eyelid or they grow in size. However, generally they are no different than the tags on other parts of the body.
One thing important to keep in mind regarding skin tags on eyelids is that you must take due precautions as eyes are very sensitive and important parts of the body. It is highly recommended to avoid all those over the counter solutions that contain harsh chemicals. If you do have to use any OTC, ensure to read the manufacturer’s directions and if in doubt ask for clarifications.
The Most Common Areas Where Skin Tags Grow
As mentioned earlier, they grow on any part of the body but skin tags under the arms, eye lids and back of the neck are very common.
The ones under the arms or close to the armpits may be due to the high frequency of friction caused by the arm rubbed against the body.
The ones on the eye lids is caused by friction due to the folds. As we age, the folds become deeper. That is the reason that you will find tags on the eyelids mostly among the older people.
Skin tags on the neck is also caused due to friction. We when sleep our neck is constantly rubbed against pillows. This causes friction leading to the growth of skin tags on the neck.
Skin Tags and Self-Confidence
One of the biggest reasons that people would want to cure skin tags is that it causes social embarrassment. People having skin tags on their body may be reluctant to go to beach or may avoid parties because they have this embarrassing hanging flesh on their eye lids or their face.
People having skin tags around anus, penis, vagina or buttocks even feel embarrassed before their partners. Some people even would not like their partners have skin tags around their private parts. This causes personal embarrassment.
This embarrassment leads to lack of self-confidence and sometimes even stress and mild depression.
So what to do if this happens?
Remember feeling stressed or depressed will make the problem even worse. So, no need to be stressed or depressed.
First thing, do not feel embarrassed. It is not something that you caused to grow.
Then, it is a harmless thing. It does not harm you or others in anyway.
Take a breath!
And there are ways to treat the problem as we have detailed in this post.
You can go to the doctor, or a dermatologist. You can use the home remedies or any readymade formula like H-skin tag formula. I mean there are many ways that can help you get rid of the problem.
So, don’t worry. Relax. Based on your individual situation, select the best method that suits you.
